New Job
It has been a while since I last browsed the Recruit section of The Straits Times. When I looked at it again last Saturday, I was surprised that the thickness of this section has increased. It’s a good sign – more job openings and the end of recession.
Somehow, I’ve forgotten how it feels to attend a job interview, start a new job, adapt to a new working environment and meeting new colleagues. I’ve been working with my current company for six good years now. It’s so-called a ‘comfort zone’ to me, with just 10-15 minutes away from home.
My first job was a product qualification engineer in a local semiconductor manufacturing firm (after my graduation). It was also the toughest among all. Being a fresh graduate, I was totally clues about the manufacturing process. I was trained by a few senior engineers in my department and I learnt a lot from them. However, the working hours were insane; I need to be on-call 24/7. I left this company two years later. Reason being – it is difficult to succeed in this male-dominated industry.
I joined another local firm as a customer service planner. Reporting to the Sales Director, I was the primary interface with the customers. My responsibilities were to manage the customer’s demand and collaborate with the factory planning team for loading execution. I enjoyed this job a lot, mainly because I get to meet new people and the company’s culture is good. Sad to say, I left this company two years later due to their poor business and slow growth.
I like my current job; otherwise I won’t be able to stay for so long. Although this is not my dream job, but I also couldn’t see myself holding a high-paying corporate job. All I want is a nine-to-five job with a monthly pay check (that’s the unambitious side of me!).
And so, after 315 words, all I want to say is I will continue to ‘rot’ here for the time being. No intention to find a new job or making a career switch this year.
To a genuinely nice friend of mine who is starting his new career next week, I wish him all the best. I hope that he will enjoy working in a new environment and meeting new friends. All the best to you, my dear friend!

Hello! Happened to come across your blog today while browsing…
Anyway, as long as you like your work, its good to stay on!
Hi Jus,
Yes, it’s good to stay on. Making a career change needs a lot of courage, patience and determination. At the current economic situation (not certain whether the recession is really over!), I prefer not to make a change.
