happy-new-year

Wishing all of you a very Happy New Year! With hardly a few hours left in 2009, all of us are all set and geared up to welcome Year 2010 with great enthusiasm. I hope that the New Year will bring more opportunities, prosperity and definitely – the end of recession!

Looking back on 2009, it’s a year to remember and it’s a year to learn from our mistakes. For the past few days, I’ve been thinking back and listing what I thought the highs and the lows were. There were many moments that make me smile, and I’m going to write them down chronologically.

January – It’s the brand new start of year 2009, as well as the Chinese Lunar Year. Little Edison was 16 months, and he was developing at an amazing speed. He was a lot more sociable and he enjoyed exploring the world and interacting with people.

February – 2009 has been a tough year for many of us. Closure, lay-offs and pay-cuts were norm for many businesses. My company implemented 4-days workweek in order to cut operating costs and avoid lay-offs. There were so many uncertainties during these economic hard times. I’m thankful that I’m still employed.

April – We were busy struggling with Little Edison’s food strike and tantrums this month. His sudden loss of appetite puzzled all of us. We brought him to the pediatrician twice and we fed him with syrup to stimulate his appetite. It took about 3 weeks for him to recover to his usual eating habits, and we noticed that he lost some weight too.

May – We made a trip to my hometown in Ipoh, Malaysia this month. A nice family gathering and Little Edison had a great time with his cousins – Jaynie and Jaerone. I’ve always missed my parents and siblings, I wish that I can spend more time with them.

July – Little Edison was 22 months and he was more independent in many areas. He has mastered a broad range of physical skills such as throwing, catching, running, kicking, climbing and balancing. He was as active as an Energizer Rabbit. Simply unstoppable.

September – It was Little Edison’s second birthday! From a tiny little baby two years ago, he has blossomed into a cheerful and happy kid. He continues to inspire me to be the best mom that I can be.

November – It was my birthday month. I’m thankful that I married someone who supported me in all aspects of my life. He stood by me when things were bad, and he has been a constant joy in my life. Without him, I will not be who I am today.

December – Coming to the end of year 2009, I have too much to be thankful for – my husband and son who bring me happiness and joy, my parents who love me and give me guidance all these years, my parents-in-law who take great care of me, my siblings & brother-in-law who are my constant support and not forgetting my friends who stand by me no matter what my choices are.

On the whole, 2009 is an awesome year for me. I’m looking forward to 2010 and the challenges and opportunities it will bring.

My wishes for everyone of you – Great Start for Jan, Love for Feb, Peace for March, Happiness for April, Fun for May, Joy for June, Good Health for July, Good Luck for August to Nov and Success for Dec. Happy New Year and Have a Wonderful 2010!

VaccinationOne last item in our to-do list before the school starts is to have Little Edison vaccinated against chickenpox. So, we went to Kid’s Clinic at Bishan for the vaccination yesterday.

Some parents think that it is better for the child to get chickenpox naturally as we all went through it and there are no long term effects. Personally, I feel that although chickenpox is a mild disease and most children will recover without any long term effects, there is still a small chance that the child might develop serious complications.

Chickenpox is a week long illness and the child will be very uncomfortable and also infectious. The child will develop fever, loss of appetite and becomes increasingly irritable when the pimple-like bumps turn into liquid-filled blisters. It will also leave ugly chickenpox marks all over the body and face. If the child contract chickenpox in the adulthood, it is even more severe.

Now that there is a vaccine for chickenpox and if we vaccinate our child, then we don’t have to worry about all these problems. The vaccination offers 95% protection against chickenpox. This means that the unfortunate 5% will still get chickenpox infection. However, they will get a milder form of the infection, with less severe symptoms and much less skin lesions too.

The cost of the vaccination is $80, excluding the $40 consultation charge. At two years old, Little Edison will need two doses of the vaccine. The commonest side effects of the vaccine are fever and local inflammation at the injection site.

We are glad to protect Little Edison from this highly infectious disease!

We collected our new Cerato Forte the day before Christmas. We bought it as our second car and I’ll be driving it to work and to send Little Edison to school in the morning.

When I first catch a glimpse of this car at the KIA’s showroom, I was amazed by how much improvement it has over the older KIAs. It doesn’t look like a regular Asian car at all. Its exterior is classy as well as sporty and oozes a good taste. Some even say that it bears the resemblance to the Civic Type R but I wasn’t sure. And later, when I learnt that the designer of this car is from Audi, I was surprised.

It feels like a featherweight when I drive this car because its power steering is extremely light. The steering wheel is nice to hold with a nice leather material around the wheel as well as in the center. Its speedometer is a true beauty that glows with a red background. The interior is well laid out and offers ample room for four people. In addition, it has a very spacious boot space too. Perfect for family outing and picnic.

Other interesting goodies include the 17-inch alloy wheels instead of 15-inch steel ones, a six-CD changer, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering, electronically-dimmed rear-view mirrors, climate control, rear parking sensors, iPod connectivity, full Bluetooth capability and even electronic stability control.

In terms of size, it is slightly bigger and longer than my husband’s Toyota Altis. I feel a little jittery every time I drive this Forte because of its size. I have to handle it with extra care.

This is our New KIA Cerato Forte, 1.6L SX model in Dark Cherry. Kia really offers good value at an outstanding price. We are glad to find this car for our family without breaking the bank.
