When I send my boy to school this morning, I saw a nervous couple trying to leave their teary tantrum-filled girl in her class. As soon as the door is closed, I can hear the girl crying aloud. The mother looked so heart-broken. I looked at her and I recalled myself being in the same situation a year ago. I can really understand how she feels.

When Little Edison started his first year of preschool in January last year, he cried almost every morning. Prior to preschool, he has never been left alone with strangers. The stress of being left alone at school has also manifested into crying, demanding and clingy behaviors at home. I felt terribly guilty about his overwrought emotions and behaviours ever since he started preschool. He used to be a cheerful and happy boy at home.

With our help and support, he managed to overcome his separation anxiety (in about a month or so). Today, I’m going to share with you my 6-point plan. Hopefully, this plan will also help some of the parents who are dealing with this issue since the school started last week.

6-Point Plan to Deal with Separation Anxiety:

1. Speak to your child about school in an upbeat and positive manner. Encourage them to tell you what they like and dislike about school. Constantly highlight the fun times they had at school, the names of their teachers as well as classmates.

2. Keep goodbyes short. This is VERY important. Sometimes, parents accidentally reward the initial crying and then it becomes a habit. For example, if a parent prolongs the goodbye because the child is crying or offers some rewards to encourage them to stop crying, then they learn that by crying, mommy/daddy will stay a little longer, or that mommy/daddy will bring a treat later. So, a quick kiss and goodbye is important.

3. Trust and have faith in the preschool teachers. Crying children is nothing new to them. If they can’t get your child to calm down, they’ll be in touch with you. Trust in their experience and know that they will have your child’s best interest at heart.

4. Experiment with changing the person who drops them off or having a different teacher to receive them at school and see if it makes a difference.

5. Find out what the school routine is like so that you can tell them in a more concrete way when you are picking them up. For example, tell them, “I will pick you after you finish singing and dancing” if music and movement is their last activity before dismissal.

6. Do set some limits at home (e.g. no hitting others) and also encourage independence (e.g. eat by themselves). This is necessary at this stage of their lives to foster good behaviours. If you let your guilt take-over, you might over-indulge and cause his behaviour to worsen.

However, should your child be the rare one who does continue crying, then it would be beneficial for you to talk to the teachers or principal. If you find that your child is truly not ready, do not hesitate to cut back their hours at school or hold off school. Gradually increase your child’s exposure to other children and adults in various settings before trying school again.

Good luck and all the best, mommies! :)

The next time you’re stuck waiting with an antsy bored kid, why not break out your iPhone? Well, I’m sure many of us do that. Nothing offers a better distraction for bored kids than mommy or daddy’s cool iPhone.

iPhone is fun and easy to use; we don’t even need to bring toys, books and pencils. It’s definitely the best method to keep our little boy to sit still. Especially when dining out, iPhone is my savior!

Here are some of Little Edison’s favourite iPhone apps to share with you.

1. Smurfs’ Village

His #1 favourite now. You begin the game with only a single mushroom house and a lone plowed plot of land. From there, things progress allowing you to build specialized houses, elaborate gardens with colourful crops, bridges to span running rivers, trodden paths and more. Interesting game!

[Note: Some virtual items in this game are chargable. You need to watch your children when they play to prevent accidental buys that cost real money.]

2. Scoops

Scoops is a game where you try to catch the falling ice cream onto your cone but avoid the vegetables. Easy and colorful.

3. A Bee See Sight Words

This is a talking and spelling flash cards and games for children. Different levels of settings suitable for children from 3 to 5 years.

4. ABC Phonics Animals

It focuses on the alphabet phonetics, spelling, reading and sounds. Traditional flash cards layout combined with interactive elements such as animal sounds and preschool music. Good learning apps.

5. Giraffe’s Matching Zoo

A card-matching game with colorful animals. Comes with cute music and sound effects that keeps the game entertaining. Combination of excellent sounds, music and graphics make it a wonderful free apps for kids.

6. My First Puzzles

An easy jigsaw puzzle apps perfect for children from 2 to 6 years. Comes with fun sound effects and beautiful graphics. To replay the puzzle, simply give the iPhone a good shake. Helps develop motor skills too!

7. Alphabet Car

A fun apps that makes remembering letters, words and spelling a fun and creative activity. You find the right letters to a given word by using your iPhone like a steering wheel.

8. Bumblebee Touchbook

You can touch any word to watch it animate and hear it spoken. Or touch the narration bee to hear the entire page read to you. Makes learning fun and easy. The bumblebee is super cute too.

9. SpongeBob Tickler

A virtual underwater iPhone buddy who lives in your pocket. Shake him, poke him, stretch him… you can even play games and make him dance! Cute and fun.

…..

What are your children’s favourite iPhone apps? I love to hear from you too. :)

You can see me and Little Edison in the newspaper today. Say it with me… Awwww!

Not the classified ads section definitely. Check out The New Paper today at page 20. The story is also available online. Click HERE to read. OR click HERE for the pdf version.

It’s probably the first time I see my face in a national newspaper. Gosh, it feels so surreal.

Here’s a snapshot of the article. It’s about me and my blog.

[Special thanks to Crystal for the interview and photoshoot.]

Siloso Beach is known as the place for beach volleyball and other outdoor activities such as canoeing, skim boarding, mountain biking or rollerblading. It’s also a favourite hang out place for the young and beautiful, I would say.

What I like about this beach is that it is so clean and and pleasant, with plenty of bars, restaurants and facilities nearby. The pace and volume usually pick up at sunset.

Little Edison wanted to make sandcastles so we brought him to Siloso beach last weekend. As we walked passed a casual Italian eatery, we saw a very nice children playground on the beach. Little Edison quickly ran to the playground with excitement.

Soon, we learnt that the playground belongs to the Italian eatery named Trapizza. It serves pizzas, pastas, snacks and desserts. What a perfect place! It will be dinner by the sands accompanied by the soothing breezy sea for me and V. We ordered the crispy thin-crust pizzas which are made upon order using a traditional wood-fired oven. They are so delicious!

This combination of pizza, bar and beach is a great weekend hang-out, away from the bustling city and crowd. We shall make our way back someday.

I’m in a shutdown mode since Christmas eve, I can’t help but wonder how time flies when I’m not working. Before I can even savor with much gusto the needed weekend rejuvenation, it’s back to work again. Tomorrow will be my first day of work in year 2011. School is starting tomorrow too.

Last week, we were busy exploring places in Singapore. We had beach outing at Sentosa, we visited the Underwater World (which I’m going to blog about it today), the Zoo, the Polliwogs and had a few shopping trips.

Sentosa Underwater World is a well-known oceanarium showcasing some 2500 marine life from 250 species from around the regions. It provides fun, leisure as well as educational experiences. After seven years since my last visit, the place gave me a totally refreshing experience again.

What I admire about Underwater World is its display concept that allows visitors to experience the mysterious ocean in an astounding proximity. Now, there is also a Dolphin Lagoon that completes a seamless visit to the bottom of the sea.

Near the entrance, there is a place not-to-be missed. It is the Touch Pool which is a big hit among the kids. They can sink their hands into the water and touch some of the small fishes, stingrays and starfishes in the pool. Amazing, isn’t it? Little Edison was extremely delighted that I’ve to keep reminding him not to catch the fish out of the pool.

The highlight of this oceanarium is definitely the 80-metre conveyor walkway that brings the visitors on an exciting voyage through the acrylic display tunnel, which houses sea creatures from diverse geographical origins of the world. I was particularly amazed by the giant grouper (it is as long as a human!) and the giant spider crabs.

Little Edison was totally mesmerised by the 250 different species of aquatic life presented in front of him. Then, he saw a diver carrying a bucket of fishes in the acrylic. He watched with excitement as the diver fed the big fishes with the small fishes. He said to me, “Mama, the big fish eats the small fish.”

Another highlight of the place is the Dolphin Lagoon. It has shows that run at roughly 30 minutes combining a dolphin-trainer and fur seals encounters. Unfortunately, we had to give it a miss due to the overwhelming crowds.

We really enjoyed out trip to the Underwater World. It’s a unique experience for all of us. It’s also an educational trip for our little boy.

For information on opening hours, admission charges and how to get there, please visit their official website at http://www.underwaterworld.com.sg/. Have a splashing good time!
