I google on this subject today. Most articles that I read have the same conclusion. At two years old, a child is expected to have at least fifty words in their vocabulary and to be saying two and three word phrases. We can expect him/her to answer simple questions too.
Okay, that’s a good one. I’m going to do a quick count of the number of words that Little Edison has spoken (clearly) to-date.
People:
Papa, Mama, Yeye (grandfather), Ah-Ma (grandmother), Gong-gong, Popo, Kakak, baby
Objects:
Crocs, book, bus, car, mug, star, moon, cloud, balloon
Animals:
Cat, dog, ant, bee, rabbit, fly, fish
Food:
Yakult, egg, bread, grapes, pear, lime, orange, ice
Action:
Eat, study, walk, wear, shower, go home, up, down, poo, pee, bite
Colours:
Red, purple, pink, brown, black, white, green, blue, orange
Numbers:
One to ten (occasionally he will skip #7)
Others:
Hi, bye-bye, no more, don’t know, don’t want, more
Chinese Words:
Tou (head), jiao (leg), ya (tooth), shou (hand), papa, mama, ye-ye, nai-nai, ge-ge, di-di, jie-jie, mei-mei
Great! He has more than fifty words in his vocabulary now. Recently, he has started to say two-three word phrases spontaneously and construct simple sentences.
The other day, Daddy was not working. He was about to leave the house at 6pm to fetch me from my office. Little Edison ran to him and said “I want Mummy!” Apparently, he wanted to tag-along with Daddy to fetch me. I was so touched when MIL told me about this incident.
Last night, my helper told him that she will be going home next year. Little Edison replied “Go home, kakak. Bye-bye!” He doesn’t seem to be bothered about my helper’s return next year. He is just so funny at times.
Speech continues to develop at an amazing rate for Little Edison. I’m waiting for him to say “I love you, mummy!” These words will definitely touch my heart like nothing else can.

Whether it’s raining, sunny, too warm or too cold, there are times when we just can’t allow our toddlers to play outside. So, what can we do with our toddlers to beat their boredom without breaking our budget?
Indoor playground is the answer!
We went to the Polliwogs twice this month, and we absolutely love the place. Don’t be surprised if you see me there (again) this weekend. I realize that chasing after Little Edison in the playground and climbing through these tunnels are great exercise for me. Best of all, I don’t have to worry about the sun and getting sweaty!
It’s also a wonderful work-out for Little Edison. After a whole hour of running, climbing, laughing and screaming, he has a good appetite for dinner and milk. He hits the sack as soon as we reach home. Totally fuss-free!
I stumbled upon a fantastic guide to indoor playground and amusement parks in Singapore today. Let’s check out this guide in KiasuParents website today and get some ideas to plan your weekend activities.

It is confirmed – Little Edison will start his Nursery class in Jan 2010, which is just two months away from now. We received a confirmation from the church kindergarten last week.
Seriously, I have a mixed feeling about him going to school next year. To think about it positively, I believe that he will benefit from the group-learning environment in the kindergarten. He will also enjoy the companionship and opportunity to socialize with children of his age.
On the flip side, I’m worried about his level of independence. He is barely 27 months in January next year. Is he too young for school? Will he hate me for sending him to school at such a tender age? Will he cry when I leave him at school? Can he eat meals on his own at school? Can he take care of himself at school? Can he convey what he needs to his teacher?
I have endless questions in my mind now. I’m confused. And I’m just soOoo worried.
Mummies, if you are sending your two-year-old to Nursery next year, can you tell me how you feel now?

I’m always on the lookout for interesting educational CDs for Little Edison. I’m firmly against too much television viewing for young children, thus I’m very selective in buying these CDs. I want something that teaches and entertains all at once and something that can give me a moment to relax.
Recently, I found another great learning tool for Edison – it’s the Leapfrog Educational DVD series. (Thanks to Nicole for sharing these DVDs with me.)
I’m currently showing him the first part of this DVD series – Letter Factory. In this DVD, children are exposed to all 26 letters of the alphabet and are taught the phonetic pronunciation of each letter. What’s special about the Letter Factory is that it combines the visuals of the letters with the sounds that they make in a very catchy tune.
The other DVDs that I have are Math Circus, Talking Words Factory and Code Words Caper. I’ve yet to watch them.
Little Edison loves the Letter Factory. For the first time, he watched this DVD with me for half an hour, from A to Z. I was surprised. The next day, he brought the DVD to me and said “Frog, open!”. He refers to the frogs – Tad, Lily and Leap in the DVD.
They are highly recommended to preschoolers from 3 to 6 years.

Received my bento tools from BP finally (after a long wait!). I ordered them in end August, it takes eight weeks for the items to arrive Singapore.
The Shinkansen bento box is super cool! It’s definitely my favorite among all. Long weekend is coming; it’s the best time to make my first bento for Edison. Hopefully I can publish the picture of my first bento in my blog next week.
