Raising a Happy Child

May 22, 2009May 31, 2011

So happy! The other day when I was visiting my family doctor due to cough, he gave me a little note on how to raise a happy child.

I found this note again last night when I was tidying up my table. I read it twice. It gives me a lot of inspirations.

I’m going to share some of the insightful points with you here. If you are interested to read in full, please drop me an e-mail and I’ll be more than happy to send it to you.

…

 Children need love
Children are not spoiled by too much love, but rather by too little. They can sense feelings towards them. The child who is loved knows it and develops into a contented and mature adult.

Love has to be unconditional. Children have to receive genuine love, not becuase they are pretty, talented or have great personalities.

Children need security
A feeling of security comes not only from being loved but also from growing up in a secure home that is free from fighting parents, child abuse, over interference from siblings and the problems of drugs.

A warm bed, sufficient food and clothings are all part of providing security to our children.

Children need discipline
Children need the security of firm, consistent and loving discipline. If a parent tells a child not to do something and the child does it anyway, the parent must correct the child. To ignore the offense is to sanction the disobedience and encourage more rebellion.

The punishment should fit the crime. Reserve the harshest punishments for instances when the child has wilfully disobeyed. Never make threats that you cannot or will not carry out.
