Some of you may have heard of Superstar Teacher. It is an online learning platform that provides lessons through videos and supplementary materials. Conceptualized in 2011, it aims to offer students and parents the ease, joy and efficiency of learning through the internet. It is developed by a team of curriculum specialists, delivered by the best teachers, and promised to be fun and interesting. 🙂
In the video lessons, there are interactive quizzes to assess students and track their understanding. Supplementary materials like worksheets can be downloaded, printed and used along with the videos. Study tracker tool and monthly reports are also available to track progress and performance. Additionally, it’s available on app store – our child can learn anywhere and anytime!
Superstar Teacher offers 4 subjects – Math, Science, English and Chinese from Primary 1 up to Secondary 4 with optional printed worksheets (perfect for those who does not have a printer). Lessons delivered will focus on topical coverage and strategy-based learning to tackle tough schools’ and national examinations (PSLE and ‘O’ levels).
Core subjects are priced at $528 each for primary levels and $598 each for secondary levels (can be used for one year). They can be renewed for another year from $99 onwards – very cost-effective when sharing with siblings. 😀
It all sounds pretty amazing, if you ask me. But the more important questions are – How effective it is? Is it suitable for more-dependent and less-intuitive students? What’s the impact of increasing our child’s screen time with e-learning portal? There’s a lot to consider before you jump on the e-learning bandwagon.
I started using Primary 5 Superstar (Math) with Monica Leong in Dec last year. Due to time constraints to attend tuition classes on weekdays, I’ve decided to purchase it after trying out for a month (free lessons are available). And I’ve been using it consistently for almost 3 months now, so it took me quite a while to figure out my thoughts before I wrote this post.
And I loved it! 😀 I even recommended it to my friends and encouraged them to try out the free lessons. Today, I’m going to share it with you too!
Note: This is NOT an advertorial (and not sponsored). I’m sharing my own experience based on Primary 5 Superstar (Math), so other subjects may be different. If you’re keen to learn more about Superstar Teacher, please read on.
6 Things I Really Love about Superstar Teacher
1. Learn at the convenience and comfort of your home
Fretting over tuition classes is a norm among students and parents nowadays. Tuition classes used to be seen as extra help for struggling students, but now they are more like a necessity to do well in school. If you disagree, please don’t think that I’m kiasu LOL. 😛
The problem is the hassle and time of travelling to a tuition centre, especially if you’re a working parent. Some of us may opt for a home tutor to save travelling time, but they can be mighty expensive. Hence, the biggest advantage of Superstar Teacher is being able to learn at the convenience and comfort of your home.
Forget about attending classes for hours, sitting in an uncomfortable chair, taking public transport, and dragging your feet home by the end of the day. With Superstar Teacher, all video lessons are provided online – you can learn at the comfort of your home with flexible time arrangement too!
2. Learn at your own pace
We all know that every child learns differently. With self-paced learning, students can arrange a learning schedule to meet their individual needs. Edison has short attention span. Long tuition hours are definitely a NO for him. Thus, I arranged several one-hour sessions throughout the week with a weekly target set for him.
Primary 5 Superstar Math consists of 40 lessons, and each lesson is further divided into several sub-topics with its duration clearly started on its portal. Since we embarked on this program, we’ve been faithfully attending the online video lessons for 3-4 hours a week. For each session, we take about an hour to complete a sub-topic, and we aim to complete one lesson every week. In the long-term, this will also promote self-learning and independence for Edison.
If you ask me, I’d say that Edison enjoys learning from Superstar Teacher now. Initially, he was a little resistant due to his lack of interest in the subject and laziness. I told him to go back to tuition class if he doesn’t like it. Then, he was like “Ok! I will learn from the computer and no need to go for tuition, sounds like a pretty good deal!” And all is well after that.
He likes it because he can learn at his own snail speed without any peer pressure. He can also repeat a certain topic or question, pause or slow down whenever he needs. If he finds that the teacher is speaking too fast or too slow, the portal allows him to adjust the speed too. Most importantly, he can keep each session short and arrange his own timings.
3. Supplementary Materials available for each lesson
Superstar Teacher’s Academic Panel recommends giving our child a copy of the worksheet while he/she is viewing the lessons. If you don’t have a printer, you can also purchase the printed copies. With the supplementary worksheets, I find it easier for Edison to follow through the lessons.
All the questions and concepts taught in the video lessons are available on the supplementary worksheets for our child to attempt and revise. I particularly like the daily bite-sized exercises – Homework: 5 Minutes A Day, and downloadable answers for ease of marking our child’s homework.
4. Engaging Video Lessons – Parents and Child can learn together
To be honest, engaging a child in the video lessons is not an easy feat, especially if they’re not interested in the subject. Hence, interactive quiz components such as MCQ, checkbox and open-ended questions are embedded within the video to assess our child and track their understanding.
Personally, I feel that Teacher Monica Leong is very engaging, clear in her explanation and emphasizes on understanding of concepts. Her step-by-step approach in solving problem sums makes it easy for Edison to understand. Different problem-solving techniques are also taught to tackle a vast range of questions. All in all, I find that all the lessons are adequately explored.
I’m so thankful that I can finally find someone to do the teaching. There is really no way in which I would be able to impart my Math skills to Edison without tearing my hair out. I die a little inside every time I’ve to explain a problem sums to him, over and over again. With the video lesson, he can re-play the solution 10x until he can finally understand. 😆
On the other hand, I can also learn together with him. Truth be told, I never learnt stuffs like math model method and heuristics in school. So, it’s a bonus to learn them so that I can help him in his school homework too.
5. Accessible Anywhere, Everywhere!
Superstar Teacher can be accessed from anywhere as long as you’re connected to the internet. It is also available on app store. This means your child can learn anytime, anywhere – it’s learning on the go! 😎
When he is waiting for his meal or transport, it might seem like wasted time. Instead of playing games on mobile phone or tablet, he can get his hands on video lessons wherever he goes. Especially when nearing exam, every minute counts. Being able to quickly revise on weaker topics with limited time is truly an advantage.
6. Study Tracker Tool to track progress
If you want your child to learn independently without your supervision, you can make use of the study tracker tool and monthly reports (sent via email) to evaluate your child’s performance and track his/her learning progress.
This is particularly useful for older kids who are learning independently. You can tell whether they are really paying attention or doing something else when the lessons are on. You know, kids are really smart nowadays. They may just leave the video playing in the background and surf the internet in a separate window.
How I use Superstar Teacher
Comfort is a strong advantage, but it can go both ways. I don’t allow Edison to get too comfortable when studying from home, so he must abandon the couch and learn in his study room only.
Consistency is also very important. We set a timetable for him and establish a routine for learning using the online portal. We also set a weekly and monthly target. Additionally, I make use of the monthly reports to share his performance and learning progress with him.
A little reward goes a long way. What I really want to see from him is his genuine effort and dedication to learn, which I feel he’s starting to understand it too.
Superstar Teacher is truly the answer to today’s education needs. It combines the best teachers with technology to provide an effective home learning experience. The video lessons are well-prepared and comprehensive in accordance to MOE syllabus. I must say that I am very impressed with the quality and clarity of the programs. 😀
The speed of the videos is good, I’ve never experienced any issue with lagging. Cost-wise, it may look expensive at first. Truth be told, I contemplated buying it because of its cost. $528 does sound a bit expensive. But when I think of long-term, it only costs $528/12 = $44 a month – which is a very small fraction of the tuition cost (that can go up to $400 per subject!). If you purchase 2 core subjects, you can also enjoy $200 off.
My advice is to try out the free lessons with your child several times before purchasing it (it’s non-refundable). Every child learns differently and has different preferences. He / She may need several times to get used to the lessons, even though the portal is very user-friendly and easy to navigate.
Additionally, online learning may not appeal to every child. However, the growing number of online learning portals in Singapore proved to me that there is at least a strong interest in it. To reap the full benefits of Superstar Teacher, I still believe that it is important for parents to guide their children (primary levels) to learn from the portal consistently in a conducive environment.
All in all, we really enjoyed learning from Superstar Teacher and we would highly recommend that you give it a try too! 🙂
