A Memorable Birthday Party at Swensen’s

The sun was shining especially early this morning. I pulled up the blinds and I could feel the gentle heat of the sun greeting me in a special way on this special day. It was Edison’s 6th birthday.

I had a familiar feeling – the same feeling I always had on my birthday. The anxiety of gathering our friends and loved ones, the laughter around the table, the excitement in the atmosphere, the aroma of food that escapes from the kitchen, the wonderful birthday cake, and so on.

So, I quickly woke up and get prepared for Edison’s 6th birthday party at Swensen’s NEX Mall.

As I’ve mentioned in my last post, it’s really not easy to organize a birthday party. As we’re both tied-up with works, we’ve made the best decision ever to outsource it to Swensen’s. Except for sending birthday party invitation, all the other aspects of the party are well managed by the restaurant.

First of all, the venue. There are three outlets to choose from – ION Orchard, NEX Mall and Thomson Plaza. NEX Mall is certainly the best choice for us due to its close vicinity to his kindergarten, and most of his classmates are also staying near the area.

The restaurant is very spacious, and they have a dedicated area to hold a birthday party which is separated from the other guests in the restaurant. So, we get all the privacy for our party. Yay!

The area is squarish, so tables and chairs can be neatly arranged at the center. The food and drinks are arranged in separate corners in a buffet-style. The moment we walked in, we fell in love with the party decorations and venue.

The area is so comfortable to host guests up to 40 pax, and beautifully decorated with balloons and party banners. The restaurant also prepared party packs for the kids.

Food and Drinks

The birthday tea party comes with a choice of five main courses, and we chose the mini chicken puff, pizza bread, chicken baked rice, meatball in tomato sauce, as well as U.S. fries. The restaurant also provides free flow of soft drinks, coffee and tea, and a single scoop ice-cream for all the guests.

The kids really enjoyed the pizza bread and fries. Before I had a chance to take pictures of the food, they were queuing up again for their second servings. The restaurant is so thoughtful to arrange plastic plates and cutleries for the kids, so that it’s easier for them to take the food on their own.

Party Host

This is the best part of the party, I would say. Our party host (arranged by Swensen’s as well) did a fantastic job to ensure that the kids are engaged, entertained and have fun, as well as a perfectly co-ordinated party.

The party started with the making of firehouse ice-cream by our party host (sorry, I forgot her name). Then, she got all the kids excited when she gave them hands-on experience to make their own firehouse ice-cream. Then, she made balloons of all sorts for all the kids.

The games continued after the food. Remember the nostalgic musical chair game? She played a slightly different version using plastic specs. When the music stopped, all the kids must pick up the plastic specs from the floor. This is really exciting!

Why are these kids stuffing the party host with $50 dollar notes? This is another interesting game that she played with the kids. It’s called the ‘find me something’ game. She would mention the name of an item, i.e. EZ link card, gold coin, different coloured socks, and the first person who can find the item will be the winner and get a price from her.

This time, she made the adults participating in the games too. It was hilarious!

Birthday Cake

The birthday party package comes with a complimentary 1kg Swensen’s Ice-cream birthday cake with 3 ice-cream flavours – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. We topped it up to 2kg with the Disney theme design.

The cake is served in a beautiful display tray, and when water is poured on the dry ice, it creates a wonderful smoky “dry ice effect” that makes the kids go wow and wow!

Here’s the birthday boy blowing the candles that are glowing on top of the beautiful Disney theme birthday cake.

At the end of the party, our party host assisted Edison to distribute the party packs to all his friends. The restaurant also gave free Kid’s Club membership for all the children.

The party was an absolute success. Initially, V thought that I could have lost my mind trying to work-out all the party planning by myself. We’re truly grateful to Swensen’s for their fantastic job in organising this memorable party for our boy.

The kids had so much fun with the games and food. The parents had a chance to relax and make meaningful conversations with each other. We all have common topics – our kids, their kindergarten, and of course which primary school that they will be going next year.

The smile on Edison’s face was the biggest I’d ever seen. He enjoyed himself so much with his friends and he couldn’t stop talking about his party all day. A little bit of efforts from us to make him feel EXTRA special on his birthday, it was all worth it.

We had the most fabulous time, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made it possible. As well as all the friends, teachers and family members who took the time to attend his party.

Edison’s 6th Birthday Party

For the past three years, we celebrated Little Edison’s birthday with family members in a restaurant. I also bought cakes, party packs and goodie bags to his kindergarten to have a small-scale celebration with his teachers and classmates.

This year, I thought of doing something different. And something extra special. When I broached the subject of a birthday party, V’s response was “Aren’t we going to celebrate it the same way as previous years?”

As expected, he isn’t a big fan of elaborated birthday party. But I told him that this is our son’s last year in this kindergarten. Perhaps, it will be a good idea to throw a birthday party for him, and inviting all his classmates. It’s a perfect opportunity for these kids to gather and create beautiful memories that last a lifetime.

Finally, he agreed.

Talking about birthday party, I have these things in my mind now – the venue, party theme, party decor, invitation cards, balloons, goodie bags, games, activities, presents and cake. Yes, the CAKE! It’s crazy having to put together a kiddy party.

Seemingly, this is too much stress for us to handle. Our work schedule has been absolutely crazy these days. Thus, it’s certainly not feasible to DIY the entire party. At the end, we’ve decided that outsourcing is the best option.

We sourced for over a dozen of venues. We wanted somewhere cosy, family-friendly and near to his kindergarten. Then, we came across Swensen’s – one of our favourite family restaurants. I found out that Swensen’s can be our perfect one-stop solution to organise a birthday party for Edison.

I can leave all the hassles of party preparation to them. A professional party host will also be available to keep the birthday boy and party guests entertained. They will handle the food, venue decorations as well as the birthday cake. We get a complimentary 1kg Swensen’s Special Ice Cream Birthday Cake when we book a party with them.

There are two choices of birthday party – tea party (with food) and ice-cream & dessert buffet. We chose the tea party that comes with a choice of 5 main courses, free flow of soft drinks, coffee and tea, single scoop of ice-cream for all the guests, and free Kid’s Club membership for all the children. In addition, every birthday child gets a free sundae without any purchase.

Now, I’m left with just the party invitation cards and goodie bags. Best decision ever! Throwing a birthday party couldn’t be any easier now. Thanks to Swensen’s!

Two weeks before the big day, I’ve started sending the birthday party invitation cards to his classmates and tracking RSVPs. Little Edison is definitely looking forward to his birthday party.

Edison’s 5th Birthday Party at School

Two weeks ago, we held a birthday party for Little Edison at his school. Initially, I was very tempted to forgo his birthday celebration in school this year as we just came back from Hong Kong. Works were piling-up in the office, and we were running short of time for the preparation. In summary, no mood + no time.

But deep down, I know that my son loves celebrating his birthday with his teachers and friends. We did it for the past two years, and he was so delighted. Thus, in order not to disappoint him, we had a simple party at school – with all preparations done in an expedited mode. Phew!

I ordered a chocolate cake from Bengawan Solo. They are the fastest cake house that can deliver the cake among all the shops that I’ve called. The design is pretty interesting, with trains on the cake, and I’m sure our boy will love it.

Next comes the party supplies and treat bags. This year, we’re really thankful to Kitston for sponsoring the party supplies and treat bags for our boy’s birthday party. They came in just in time, the design is lovely in our boy’s favourite green, and the theme is “Feeling the Soccer heat”.

Every year, I vex over what to pack for goodie bags. This year, I assigned the task to the Husband. Then, he disappeared for two hours and came back with a big bag of snacks – lolli pops, jellies, chocolates, sweets, etc. The kids will love him for sure.

These are the treat bags sponsored by Kitston. So beautiful. I added a transparent name sticker on each treat bag to give it a personal touch.

While we were packing our treat bags, we had a chance to talk about how we celebrated our birthdays when we were young. For me, birthday was celebrated at home with my parents and siblings in a low-key manner. I don’t think my parents can afford a big party, but a simple dinner with red eggs specially-prepared by my Mom is enough to make me feel very, very special.

On that day itself, I was on annual leave but not to our boy’s knowledge. I sent him to school as usual, and then I left the school to pick-up the cake and party stuffs. The party was held during the school’s breakfast hour, and we had briefly half an hour to conduct the party.

So, it’s PARTY time now!

Edison 2

Me & Edison

All the kids were perking up to the cake, and I heard the WOWs when I put up the table cloth from the “Feeling the Soccer heat” theme. I got the boys doubly excited when I displayed the paper plates and cups. Finally, I put on the Birthday Boy pin on Little Edison. He was beaming with excitement!

Class Photo

Everyone gathered for a nice group picture, before they started singing the Happy Birthday song at Volume 10! Our birthday boy blew the candles.

Edison Blowing Candles

The colourful party supplies from the “Feeling the Soccer heat” theme were a big hit among the kids. It’s my first time using a themed party supplies, and I was continually surprised by the reaction of the kids, as well as the difference they made to a party.

Party at School

Previously, I’ve been using the plain white party supplies from NTUC. It’s plain boring, I know, but I just couldn’t figure out why I need to spend more money to buy the colourful ones since they’re meant to be thrown away after use.

But after this party, I realize the significance of using a themed party supplies. Not because they’re sponsored, but I feel that they really make a party extra special – when we have a theme for the party with all the matching party supplies and decorations.

Edison Distributing Treat Bags

It was a great joy seeing the kids enjoying themselves at the party. A time when they can talk, laugh, and play freely in the class; and be fun and boisterous as they wish to be. Our boy really enjoyed himself and he was so happy with the extra special set-up that we had for his party this year.

So, overall it was actually quite fun, easy and stress-free!
