Japanese Skincare Review: “Parunos” by k.k. IBC Research & Laboratory

We all know that Japanese women are renowned for their ageless beauty. You may have known a number of popular Japanese brands, but today I want to introduce a new brand called Parunos to you. I’ve recently fallen in love with it. ^__^ Their products are a standout for me because they are simple, high quality, and I’ve had GOOD results!

About the brand: Backed by over half century of research by the founder (Researcher and Technician) and used by many loyal users, Parunos is an organic skincare product developed by k.k. IBC Research & Laboratory Japan using natural ingredients with no scent, mineral oil, alcohol or colouring.

Developed from a scientific basis of the relationship between effective natural ingredient and physiology of the skin, the products strengthen our skin’s barrier function and enhance its self-regeneration function to keep our skin beautiful, youthful and healthy. They are safe for the most delicate skin.

My Review: I’ve been using these 4 products in the basic skincare range for two weeks now – Face Clean Jell, Moisture Lotion, Essence and Moisture Jell, and it’s super easy to follow their beauty regime. Now, I’d share my impressions of these products.

Parunos Skincare Set

Parunos Face Clean Jell, 120mL, US$32.00

Multitaskers rejoice! Parunos Face Clean Jell is a 2-in-1 facial cleaner and make-up remover. It has a thick but soft consistency and spreads effortlessly on my face. It effectively melts my non-waterproof makeup. When I add some water, it turns slightly milky.

The cleansing gel removes dirt, make-up, bacteria and dead skin cells without the need for double-cleansing. It’s certainly my saviour for the late nights when I want to wash my face in the fastest mode possible so that I can rest early.

Face Clean Jell 1

How to use:
  • It is recommended that water-proof makeup and lipstick to be removed using make-up remover prior cleansing.
  • Lightly pre-wash your face with warm water.
  • Use a cherry size amount and spread it on the entire face from the T-zone to U-zone in circular motions.
  • Once the gel is well adapt, rinse with warm water up to a degree of no slimy feel.
Tips on how to use the gel better!
  • The gel is so soft so it can be used even without pre-wash, but pre-wash makes the cleansing more effective.
  • You can adjust the amount while observing your skin condition. If you use too much, you could dry off your skin due to decreased in sebum production.
  • Scrubbing could damage your skin. So, please rinse carefully and ensure that your skin is moistened.

This water-soluble gel has a moisturizing effect that leaves the skin thoroughly cleansed and moist. It uses ingredients such as glycerine and carbomer (also used in high-grade medical care), as well as other plant-based ingredients to moisturize, protect and clarify our skin.

Unlike other foam cleansers, Parunos Face Clean Jell doesn’t leave me with that dry, tight feeling on my skin after rinsing. My skin feels so fresh, clean and moisturized after washing. So, I really like it! =)

The gel is SO gentle on my skin, and it’s suitable for sensitive and rough skin too.

Monthly Skincare Favourites – Jun 2015

Hey all, I’m back from Taiwan and had a good refreshing break – both from work and from blogging. It was an awesome trip except that the weather was too hot.

Since I started using Physiogel cleanser on my body two months ago, my skin has improved dramatically. Unfortunately, the scorching summer heat at Taiwan caused undesirable effects on my skin now. My legs are dry and scaly, my skin is flaky and peeling, and my body has ugly and uneven tan. Urgh! Vacation isn’t fun for this particular reason.

Today, I’m going to share with you some of the favourite skincare products that I’ve been using these 2 months.

1. Hydra-Infusion Okinawa Mask from mdd COSMECEUTICAL

Before I start writing my review on this product, let me give you a brief introduction of this brand.

mdd COSMECEUTICAL has been working for more than 7 years to create a contemporary beauty experience for individuals in the know. They focus their R&D resources on cosmeceutical development and constantly work with their research and development team in Japan to create products to suit today’s consumers’ ever-evolving lifestyle needs.

All products are developed and made in Japan. They are created with the latest cutting-edge technology. Using highly effective ingredients, and combined with high-technology, they are delivered to the deeper layers of the skin where is required. The products are fuss-free, minimalistic and gives the ultimate care for the skin. It gives consumers a wonderful convenience of products with multi-benefits. Consumers can enjoy the luxury of good skincare without paying a hefty price tag.

Tops my list is the Hydra-Infusion Okinawa Mask. I admit I’m obsessed with it now.

Infused with nourishing Okinawa deep-sea water and Hyaluronic Acid, this face mask is super moisturizing yet very lightweight. It also contains Soybean extract for skin brightening effects. In short, this is an all-in-one mask that hydrates, clarifies, brightens, and boosts cell renewal in a single step.

It can be used as a moisturizing mask (to be washed off after 30 mins) or as an overnight sleep-in mask. I prefer to leave it on (too lazy to wash off, haha!) and I wake up happily with dewy soft skin the next morning. I use it twice a week and it provides intensive hydration and brightening effects on my skin.

The colour of the mask is pretty unique – it’s transparent! It has a gel-like consistency that feels so light. I love how absolutely awesome this mask feels like when it’s slathered on my skin. It’s absorbed instantly without the sticky feeling.

So would I buy and use it again? The answer is a resounding YES please!

2. Skin Perfect CC Cream from mdd COSMECEUTICAL

This is another multi-tasker product from mdd. This all-in-one CC cream is a make-up base, sunscreen, moisturizer and anti-ageing cream that help us look great without the hard work, of course! With Marine Collagen and Ceramide complex, it also hydrates, primes and protects our skin.

Truth be told, I’m a BB / CC Cream addict as I rarely use a foundation. Skin Perfect CC Cream has a thicker consistency as compared to other BB Cream that I’ve used previously. Nonetheless, it glides on effortlessly to give a great coverage and healthy glow without the sticky feel. Personally, I feel that it’s good but not great. I like everything about this CC Cream except that it doesn’t match perfectly with my skin tone.

Would I buy and use it again? Probably not – because I like trying new BB / CC Cream and seldom re-purchase.

3. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence Eye

SK-II is the longest skincare brand that I’ve used. No matter how I change my skincare products, there will always be at least one SK-II product in my beauty regime.

Just like the Facial Treatment Essence, this eye essence is formulated with key ingredient Pitera™ fondly called ‘miracle water’ by those who swear by it. It also features the Eye Albus Complex – a combination of two plant extracts White Lupine and Alfalfa that promises to brighten and rejuvenate the skin around the eyes.

I like its smooth and velvety texture. Patted on with my ring finger, it gets absorbed quickly to moisturise the skin around my eyes (no oily residues). I use it twice a day in the morning and at night. After using it for a month, I was pleasantly surprised! I found the skin around my eye brighter and tighter. My dark eye circle seemed to be fading away too.

Initially, I was a bit concerned over its hefty price tag for such a tiny bottle (only 15mg), but a tiny bit of serum indeed goes a long way. I think it can easily last for 3 months. I will definitely continue to use it.

  • Price: 15mg S$113.00

4. Skin Perfect Brightening Nano Gel from mdd COSMECEUTICAL

First off, any skincare product that comes with a pump system automatically gets a thumbs-up from me. It reduces wastage, hygienic and convenient for use.

Skin Perfect Brightening Nano Gel comes in a sleek packaging with a pump system. It contains Vitamin C and Pearl Essence to brighten, Seaweed Extract to moisturize and Ceramides to calm our skin. It repairs, tones, hydrates, primes and protects our skin all in a single dose for fuss-free efficacy!

I use two pumps per application, twice a day in the morning and at night. It’s lightweight and absorbs easily without leaving any stickiness and shine. It’s not oily, so it doesn’t clog my pores. After the nano gel, I apply sun protect followed by BB / CC Cream.

One point that is worth mentioning here – all mdd products are scent-free and paraben-free. After using this nano gel for more than a month, my skin feels brighter and well nourished. Was I happy with it? YES!

If you like to try out different skincare brands, mdd Cosmeceutical is definitely an option that is worth having a look at.

5. IOPE Air Cushion XP (Shade C21)

I always have a weakness for Korean skincare and make-up. K-beauty influence is huge in Singapore and with convenience of online shopping, we can literally purchase any Korean skincare brands online.

The latest Korean make-up on my dressing table now is IOPE Air Cushion XP which I purchased from Qoo10. The first BB Cushion that I tried was Laneige (formerly known as the Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion), but I don’t quite like it. Firstly, the application was rather time-consuming – or maybe I haven’t got used to it. Secondly, shade #23 is a bit too dark for me, so at the end, it was chucked aside.

Surprisingly now that I give BB cushion a second try, I’m totally in love with it. IOPE Air Cushion XP is available in two shades – 21 (Fair) and 23 (Light), and three finishes – Natural Finish (N), Full Coverage (C), and a Shimmer Finish (S).

IOPE’s Air Cushion has a SPF of 50 and provides both UVA and UVB protection. The white packaging is very pretty and it comes with an extra refill.

There are many good reasons why I’m so in love with this BB cushion. Right off the bat, it is super moist and gives a superb dewy finish, great coverage yet natural looking. It lasts the whole day but still look dewy (not oily at all!). I like how it brightens up my skin and can be re-applied throughout the day without caking. Last but not least, I love the cooling effect when I apply it using the air puff and it smells really great too!

For a more detailed review, I recommend that you give this post a read. Thanks to this blogger for her super awesome and detailed review. Just like her, I highly recommend this product too. No wonder IOPE’s award-winning Air Cushion is touted as the best-selling cushion foundation in Korea.

Next time, I’ll probably try the Natural Finish (N) instead of Full Coverage (C) for a lighter coverage.

  • Price: about S$40 from Qoo10

Monthly Skincare Favourites – April 2015

I plan to start writing my monthly skincare favourites to showcase hot new products – even if they’re just new for me – I want to share these good stuffs with you. There will be an in-depth review of some products that I’d recommend you to try, as well as those that you can give them a miss. Hopefully, this will help you in finding new skincare products to add to your collection.

So, let’s get started with this review now. I’ve included the links to the products where you can find more information, product pricing, and where you can buy them.

1. KOSE INFINITY Clear Force

I’ve been using Beaute de Kose Ultimation Clear Softener Softening Serum for a long time. It’s a wipe-off, skin-softening serum with self-peel effect that is an excellent solution to my clogged pores. Unfortunately, this product has been discontinued.

The replacement product is INFINITY Clear Force. As an introduction, KOSE INFINITY is a luxurious, high-end skincare line that tackles aging symptoms and delivers their promise of youthful skin – right after your first application! It’s recommended for women in their thirties and beyond.

Clear Force is a gel emulsion with strong moisturizing and softening effects to remove dead cells, making skin soft and translucent. Its main duty is to clear dullness and roughness.

I use it after cleansing my face in the morning and at night. It comes with a dispensing pump, making it very easy to use. I dispense 2 pumps on the cotton pad and wipe all over my face in an outward motion. The texture of this emulsion is too thick for my liking so I took a while to get used to it.

Did it moisturize and soften my skin? YES – but unlike the earlier version of Ultimation Clear Softener Softening Serum, it didn’t address my concern of clogged pores. Will I buy it again? Probably no, but I might look into other INFINITY series skincare products because I find that they are suitable for my age and skin type.

  • Price: 200ml S$69.00

2. SK-II Cellumination Mask-In Lotion

Truth be told, I’ve a love-hate relationship with SK-II. I love it because it’s really good and delivers fast results. I hate it because its price-tag often hurts my wallet!

Housed in a gorgeous pearlescent glass bottle, this Cellumination Mask-In Lotion is a slightly translucent and milky white runny gel-like liquid that has a very subtle rose scent. It’s very lightweight and absorbs beautifully into the skin, providing instant hydration. My skin feels soft and looks a little more luminous after the application.

I didn’t use any cotton pad to apply it. I put a few drops into my palm and dab gently on my face twice a day. This lotion gradually takes away dullness and dryness from my skin – visible improvement was seen after using it for a month.

Priced at about $100 for 100ml, it’s a cheaper alternative to the pricey Cellumination Aura Essence ($299 for 50ml) which I’ve used for several months. I’m hopeful that it will reveal the skin’s natural luminosity with continual usage. Yes, I’m certainly keeping it in my skincare regime.

3. LANEIGE Time Freeze Intensive Cream

LANEIGE remains my all-time favourite Korean skincare brand even after trying out several other brands like Innisfree, The Face Shop and Etude House. Their newly launched Time Freeze Intensive Cream is truly a breakthrough in age defying products.

According to its website, LANEIGE says that a jar of Time Freeze Intensive Cream will “turn back the clock of your skin by 800 days” with its World’s 1st Technology Dynamic Collagen_EX. Wow! I simply couldn’t wait to try it.

This anti-aging cream promises to rejuvenate our skin’s collagen to reveal a young, refreshingly firm complexion. The result is a tighter skin and more defined facial outline as fast as 6 weeks.

I love how absolutely awesome this cream feels like when it’s slathered on my skin. It’s rich and creamy at first when I scoop it out from the tub. When I apply it on my skin, it turns into a gel with the most gorgeous slide and smells amazingly good too. The next morning after I wash my face, my skin feels moisturized and tender. Not very visible on the firming part yet, but I’ll continue to use it to see the effects.

At this point, I’m totally in love with it! Will I buy and use it again? A resounding YES, please!

4. MT Metatron MT Protect UV Base Cream (Shade: Ochre)

MT Metatron Cosmetics is a high-end skincare brand from Japan, and their products are exclusively sold through Beauty Aesthetic Salons and Clinics. Hence, the prices are slightly higher than average. I got to know this brand from Halley Medical Aesthetics.

With ratings of SPF26 and PA++, this BB cream delivers solid protection against UV and acts to support healthy, moist, and smooth skin. A generous supply of lipid-soluble Vitamin C also defends the skin against oxidation stress from UV.

Prior to this, I was using Estee Lauder Cyber White Extra Intensive BB Cream – the coverage is too sheer for my liking. Occasionally, I had to apply concealer to cover up any nasty spots.

MT Protect UV Base Cream, on the other hand, gives a medium coverage that I can completely skip the concealer. The biggest draw is its silky-smooth texture that blends flawlessly and blurs away pores. I finish off with some loose translucent powder.

This is by far the BEST BB cream that I’ve used to-date. It blends effortlessly to give my skin a healthy glow, and the Ochre shade matches perfectly with my skin tone. It’s very long-lasting too – at the end of my 9-hour work day, the coverage and oil control are still good.

  • Where to Buy: Halley Medical Aesthetics
  • Price: 30g ~S$65.00

5. Kao MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask

If you’re ever in need of a soothing eye mask to relieve your tired eyes, this is it – Kao MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask!

In fact, I’ve been using this steam eye mask even before it was sold in Singapore (I purchased them online!) This eye comfort innovation from Japan comes with a patented self-warming heat cell. Once it is air-activated, it will warm gradually to a comfortable 40? in about 1 to 2 minutes. Steam produced from the heat moistens and soothes tired eyes instantly.

The well-designed eye mask wraps our eyes gently, while the ultra-thin material conforms to our eye contours. Once the package is opened, the eye mask will begin to warm up automatically. Quickly put it on to enjoy the steam bath, and the heat will last for approximately 10 minutes.

I usually fell asleep within minutes after putting on the eye mask – leaving it still wrapped around my eyes until I wake up in the middle of the night. There are four types of masks to choose from – unscented, lavender-sage, chamomile-ginger, and fresh rose. I love the lavender-sage mask because of its extra relaxing effect.

MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask is retailing at S$6.50 (for a box of 5 pieces) exclusively at Watsons and Guardian stores. At an average cost of $1.30 per piece, I find that it’s a bit too pricey to be used daily. So, I only use it on those late nights or whenever my mind gets a little restless. I love how it refreshes my eyes and eases the tired look on me the next morning. This eye mask doesn’t work on dark eye circles though.

I stocked up so much on this steam eye mask during my last trip to Japan in 2014. The price is so much cheaper there. If you happen to go to Japan, please remember to stock up these amazing steam eye masks. One more thing, I just found out that you can request for a free sample HERE.

  • Where to Buy: Watsons and Guardian stores
  • Price: S$6.50 for a box of 5 pieces

Last but not least, I hope you find my review honest and well-balanced. If you’re like me who is constantly trying out different skincare brands and products, please share with me your favourite beauty products that are worth checking out.
