Firstly, thanks to Air Asia for creating this 2018 Long Weekend Cheat-Sheet for us. With some leave-taking from work and school holiday, we can enjoy 9 long weekends in 2018. Psst, there are actually 12, I’ll share the bonus 3 in this post. So, please read on!
Long weekends are the perfect, aren’t they? We love nothing more than a short weekend getaway from Singapore. 2018 is indeed a good year with some very nicely-placed public holidays. So, the 12 long weekends offer ample opportunities for short weekend getaways.
Let’s check out our suggestions for family-friendly holiday destinations.
Weekend Getaway Ideas
1 | Chill into the New Year at Sentosa Island
1 Jan 2018, New Year’s Day, falls on a Monday. From 30 Dec 2017 till 1 Jan 2018, you have 3 days to chill into the New Year. With school starting on 2 Jan, perhaps you wouldn’t want to travel so far. Thus, a staycation at our own Sentosa Island is just as great as travelling overseas.
Stay at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa and you’ll be transported to paradise. Being Singapore’s only beachfront hotel, you can enjoy a modern tropical holiday experience. Your kids will certainly love The Toots Club, Cool Zone and swimming pool with slides and splash pad. We’ve been here several times. Every time we come, we fall in love with the resort even more.

2 | Celebrate Lunar New Year on a cruise
Lunar New Year falls on Friday and Saturday, 16 and 17 Feb. Monday, 19 Feb, will be a school holiday. So, why not plan for a 4D3N cruise to Port Klang and Phuket on Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas?
Departing on Thursday 15 Feb and returning on Monday 19 Feb, this is the perfect time to enjoy your days at the sea, dine royally, be dazzled with world-class performances and on-board activities. We love Mariner of the Seas and totally enjoyed our 8D7N cruise to Thailand and Vietnam last year. Ovation of the Seas, please come back soon, will you?
3 | Have a Good Friday in Ipoh
Obviously on a Friday, 30 Mar, no one needs to take time-off to enjoy a well-deserve break. Why not fly to Ipoh – a food paradise in Malaysia? Just 1.5 hours away by flight.
Where to go: The Haven Resort Hotel, Ipoh – All Suites
This is an award-winning 5-star luxury resort hotel set naturally by limestone hills, forests and lake. Located a stone’s throw away from the airport, it makes a perfect venue for a fun and relaxing escape. Your little ones will definitely be thrilled with the 5-level sea-horse shaped infinity pool, and you’ll certainly fall in love with the lush greeneries.
During our last stay, we were so impressed with the beauty of its natural surroundings. Everything is SO picture perfect here. While you’re here, don’t miss out the Ipoh Tour Packages offered by the resort. You can also visit Sunway Lost World of Tambun Hot Springs & Spa, which is just 5-min drive away.
4 | Enjoy a well-deserved Labour Day in Bintan
One-third of the year is over in a blink of an eye. How fast can it be! It’s time for another short break, that’s for sure. Labour Day falls on Tuesday 1 May, so take a day off on Monday and get the kids out of school (if possible). Bintan is just 1-hour ferry ride from Singapore.
Bintan is our closest island neighbour and it’s a perfect choice if you want to get-away fast, play golf or just spend days with your kids playing on beautiful beaches with powder-soft sand. Enjoy an effortless and family-friendly vacation where all the family members will be taken care of, head to Bintan Lagoon Resort – the largest integrated resort in Bintan.
The resort has its own private jetty and immigration terminal, which is very impressive. You can skip the hassles at Bintan’s main ferry terminal and long immigration queue. Perfect for families with young kids.

5 | Let’s play at Legoland on Vesak Day
Vesak Day falls on Tuesday 29 May, take a day off from work on Monday and it’s also school holiday. Yay!
The best place to reward the kids at the start of school holiday is to bring them to a theme park. LEGOLAND Malaysia is the perfect theme park for kids of all ages. We’ve been here more than 5 times and yet, we’re still very excited to go again.
Since its opening in 2012, LEGOLAND Malaysia has consistently added new attractions such as Water Park, Star Wars and Ninja Go. I know that something great is brewing now, haha! A marine life aquarium is set to open in 2018. That gives us another reason to travel to Nusajaya.

6 | Have a “Selamat Hari Raya” in Bangkok
Hari Raya Puasa falls on Friday 15 Jun. Why not plan for a getaway to Bangkok? It’s just 2.5 hours flight away!
Where to go? Le Méridien Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok Golf Resort & Spa!
We haven’t been here yet (but have certainly shortlisted it on our 2018 travel list!). We’ve read rave reviews on travel forums and blogs. Only 15 mins drive from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, this luxurious 5-star resort features an 18-hole professional golf course and awesome Kids Club that will thrill the little ones with a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
7 | Celebrate Youth Day in Batam
Youth Day falls on Sunday, 1 Jul. The following Monday, 2 Jul, is a scheduled school holiday. So, just take a day off on Monday. Batam is just an hour away by ferry, so it’s the quickest way to escape from the stress of city life. You’ve worked hard for half of the year, time to reward yourself (again!).
Radisson Golf & Convention Center Batam opened its door in 3rd quarter of 2016, so it’s still considerably new. Ideal for fun and relaxation, it’s also very convenient as it’s located ~5km away from The Batam Center ferry terminal.
You can choose to indulge in a massage at Zoysia Spa, or a refreshing swim in the infinity pool, or simply a soothing soak in the whirlpool tub to rejuvenate yourself. Your kids will be thrilled with the Kids’ Club (I heard it’s pretty big!).
We’ve planned to visit this hotel during the year-end holiday. So, please check back for our review.
8 | Visit our neighbour, Malaysia, on National Day
Our National Day falls on Thursday 9 Aug and since the following day is a school holiday, kids enjoy an extended weekend holiday. So, please take a day off to make this a long weekend (before everyone else does!).
I’d always recommend going to Malaysia because it’s not a public holiday there and thus, less crowd. Why not make a road trip to Kuala Lumpur? It’ll take approximately four hours by car. Or opt for the 45-min flight. I’ll definitely choose the latter – to avoid being bombarded by “are we there yet?” every half hourly.
Bring your family to Sunway Lagoon Theme Park and stay at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Sunway Pyramid Hotel or Sunway Clio Hotel for a fun-filled vacation. A 3D2N package starts from just RM1300++ that includes breakfast and theme park admission tickets for 2 adults and 2 children. How affordable is that!
9 | Discover Taiwan on Teacher’s Day & Sep school holiday
Teacher’s Day falls on Friday 31 Aug and it’s a school holiday. Sep school holiday will start from 1 Sep. You’ve in total 10 days to escape for a well-deserved vacation.
The sweltering hot summer in Taiwan is officially over in September. This is a good time to travel to Taiwan when the breezy autumn becomes your mate. Check out our 8D7N Taiwan Free & Easy Itinerary for some ideas on where to go. Taipei, Kaohsiung, CingJing and Taichung are the cities that we’ve visited.
10 | Celebrate Children’s Day at Desaru Coast
Children’s Day falls on Friday 5 Oct and it’s a school holiday for primary schools. Take a day off for a quick 3D2N escape to Desaru Coast (opening in 2018).
I don’t know yet the official opening date of this premium integrated resort in Desaru, but I sure know I can’t wait to check it out lol. There’s a range of accommodation options to choose from. The Hard Rock Hotel is a great family-friendly option with Hard Rock Roxity Kids Club – which has a large pool area to splash around, and activities to keep the kids entertained.
What’s more? The Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark and Desaru Coast Riverside are just next door. Be prepared for endless fun, your kids will certainly be exhausted at the end of each day. Hello couple time!
11 | Spend the Deepavali in Bintan
Deepavali falls on Tuesday 6 Nov, just take your Monday off, and get the kids out of school for a day. Do you need a good reason for that? SA2 is over! That’s all that matters lol.
If you haven’t been to Bintan this year, check out Nirwana Gardens Bintan. This integrated beach resort offers five accommodation options ranging from family-friendly to the romantic and exclusive. It’s a perfect relaxing haven from bustling Singapore.
Travelling to the resort is totally fuss-free. Just an hour by ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. When you arrive at Bintan Ferry Terminal, take the complimentary shuttle bus and you’ll arrive at the beautiful resort in 10 mins.
The resort is full of kid-friendly activities such as archery, shooting, flying fox and a Kids’ Club. Our favourite is definitely the Ninebot Tour that brings you for a 1-hr sight-seeing tour around the resort. Choose between morning or sunset tour, it’s certainly a great experience not to be missed.

12 | Say Happy Christmas at Hong Kong Disneyland
Christmas Day falls on Tuesday, 25 Dec (who doesn’t know that lol). Take the eve off and enjoy year-end bonding with the kids. There’s no better place than magical Disneyland to celebrate Christmas. Do you agree?
In addition, this is absolutely the most beautiful time of the year to visit Hong Kong. The park will be crowded than usual and you must be prepared to pay a higher price for hotel too. Nonetheless, I’d feel that it’s certainly worth it for the once in a lifetime experience to celebrate an enchanted Christmas with your favourite Disney Characters.
